ATHENS, Texas (KLTV) - A joint agreement has been approved between the Athens Municipal Water Authority and the City of Athens to create a beach area for swimmers expected to potentially open next Spring.

In a joint effort between the Athens Municipal Water Authority and the City of Athens, the early planning stages are underway for a closed-off swimming area in Lake Athens. Larry Gatlin with the water authority said it will be about 75 feet long and 150 feet wide, and be boomed off, away from boating and ramp areas. The city council approached his office with the idea to open the lake up to everyone.

“It will be restricted access for daytime use only. So it’s a project that allows the people, the citizens of Athens, and the state to access Lake Athens without having a boat,” Gatlin said.

Gatlin said that if all goes according to plan the swimming area will be finished by late next spring.
