SMITH COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) - Smoke alarms roused a sleeping woman and baby who managed to escape a fire in a home Thursday afternoon.
The woman and baby fled to a house two doors down to call the fire department. The call came in at 1:00 p.m. according to Smith County Fire Marshal Jay Brooks.
Multiple volunteer fire departments responded to the home in the 10300 block of Lakeshore Drive working several hours to extinguish the fire.
Brooks reports the home was destroyed, and the two homes next door had minor damage.
No cause has been determined and Brooks said the renters of the home had no insurance and “they’ve lost everything and will have to start from scratch.”
