LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - On Thursday, two men have been arrested for attempting to use a homemade tow truck to steal a dodge truck.
The victim of the incident chased the suspects from the old K-Mart, down to Old Diboll highway, off the 100 block of Pinery Road in Burke.
Lufkin police have identified 39-year-old Danny Bearden and 41-year-old Kenneth Black as the two men who attempted to steal a vehicle.
The owner of the vehicle was in the parking lot at the time of the incident, when the suspects hooked up the vehicle to their homemade tow truck.
Lufkin’s public information officer Jessica Pebsworth says the owner called 911, then began chasing the suspects.
“From Shirey Lane the victim let us know that he was southbound on US-59 headed into the burke area. So, our officers were in pursuit at that point,” Pebsworth said. “They did have eyes on the tow truck. At that point, other agencies became involved.”
Shortly after, officers found the abandoned tow truck.
“They probably had a roughly 15-minute lead on getting away, but our officers found them maybe 25 minutes later in a tree lines roughly 300 yards from where they abandoned the pickup truck,” Pebsworth explained.
Officers recovered a backpack but have not said what was in it.
“They did find equipment inside the pickup, including a Sawzall. Those items can be used in different kind of crimes, so we will be looking into that angle,” Pebsworth added.
Bearden and black have been charged with felony theft.
“That does happen pretty frequently. Someone will interrupt a burglary of their vehicle or a vehicle being stolen,” Pebsworrth said. “We do not ever advise people to chase the subject, just because you do not ever know if they are armed. In this case, it did work out okay for our victim. He did get his pickup truck back.”
Pebsworth says the Angelina county sheriff’s office, DPS, Diboll PD and constable Ray Anthony all assisted on the arrest.
