Steve Sarkisian hits the ground running in Austin
AUSTIN, Texas (KLTV) - Steve Sarkisian landed in Austin on Tuesday just hours after helping lead Alabama to another national title as their offensive coordinator.
Sarkisian takes over as the University of Texas Longhorns head football coach following the team parting ways with Tom Herman.
While in Austin, Sarkisian landed a verbal commitment by Lewisville junior Armani Winfield, ranked No.50 in the 2020 recruiting class.
“To the high school coaches in the state of Texas, this is your program,” Sarkisian said in his opening press conference. “I have so much respect for high school football in the state of Texas. I do think that it is vitally important for the Longhorns to get back to the top of college football, we need to keep the best players at home.”
So far the program has landed 18 signees in this year’s recruiting class.
“This work will be all gas and no brakes,” Sarkisian said. “We will go to it full fledge. We will lay down the hammer and go get it.”
Sarkisian will take over a team that went to four-straight bowl games. The Longhorns finished their 2020 season 7-3 including a win in the Alamo Bowl. Sarkisian won the 2020 Broyles Award winner, handed out yearly to the top assistant coach in college football. He has previous head coaching experience with USC and Washington.
