ATHENS, Texas (KLTV) - At Monday night’s meeting, the Athens City Council voted to hire John Densmore as the new police chief. Densmore is currently serving as a lieutenant with the Cedar Hill Police Department.
According to a post on the City of Athens Facebook page, Densmore said he is excited about getting started as the new chief of the police department.
“The group of guys I met has been fantastic,” Densmore said in the post. “Chief Williams is going to be great to work with. Everybody I’ve met in the city has been very welcoming.”
The City of Athens started its search for a new chief after Buddy Hill retired in August of 2020. Hill had been the chief for 29 years. Rodney Williams has been serving as the interim police chief.
A search firm that specializes in hiring police chiefs conducted background checks on the candidates, according to a previous KLTV story.
During the intense screening process, the initial group of 42 applicants was whittled down to 13. Then that group was narrowed down even further to five finalists, the Facebook post stated.
“The finalists went through interviews with City staff, a panel of local law enforcement officials, a citizens committee, and the City Council,” the Facebook post stated.
City Manager Elizabeth Borstad said in the Facebook post that the City of Athens was very thorough in its search for a new police chief.
“Mr. Densmore is a well-qualified, experienced individual with a passion for law enforcement,” Borstad said.” I look forward to working with him.”
Densmore is scheduled to start as the new Athens police chief on Monday, Feb. 8.
