TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - Tuesday afternoon fire destroyed a residence and possibly claimed the life of an elderly woman.

Smith County Fire Marshal Jay Brooks said that at around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, a structure fire broke out in the 12000 block of Garland St. near Thompson Lane just outside Tyler. The structure, a single-family residence occupied at the time only by a woman believed to be in her 80s. Lindale, Dixie, Red Springs and Noonday volunteer fire departments responded to the call, as well as the chief from Smith County Emergency Services District No. 2, Terry Rozell.

Brooks said the crews found heavy fire in the rear of the structure upon arrival.

“After making entry and during an initial search, they located one elderly female victim, likely in her 80s,” Brooks said. “EMS took over patient care and deemed her beyond saving and she was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The victim’s body has been sent for an autopsy as it was not immediately apparent what injuries were the cause of death. Additionally, no cause of the fire has been confirmed yet due to an ongoing investigation.

“There are still items and devices under investigation as to possible ignition sources,” Brooks said, also confirming that the fire resulted in a total loss of the home.
