WASHINGTON D.C. (KLTV) - A Tyler man attending President Donald Trump’s “Save America” march witnessed the moments that people stormed the U.S. Capitol building.
“I don’t think anybody could have ever expected for this to happen,” said Jalam Lewis of Tyler.
Lewis and his cousin traveled from Tyler to Washington D.C. to attend Wednesday’s “Save America” march. He said their reason for being there was to pray for the president and the country.
“We were at the rally to hear the president speak,” he said. “We got pretty close. We waited in line for several hours and we wanted to show support for the president for the last four years.”
But hours after the president’s speech, Lewis could see and hear a changing tone close to the Capitol building.
”All of a sudden, you start hearing sirens,” he said. “You start seeing the Capitol police coming from all over.”
Lewis said he and others were unable to get any news alerts while on the ground and were unaware of what was happening inside the Capitol building.
”We never got any news updates until about 45 minutes after that had happened. And what’s crazy is you’re just about 50 to 100 yards away from the Capitol. You’re seeing everything that’s happening on the outside, but you don’t have any idea of what’s happening on the inside.”
Tonight, Lewis and his cousin are confined to their hotel room as the city around them remains locked down.
