NEW CHAPEL HILL, Texas (KLTV) - Multiple fire departments responded to a large blaze at a 24-hour gas station early Monday morning in Smith County.

The fire started at the CEFCO Convenience Store on State Highway 64 East, across from Chapel Hill High School, sometime before 2 a.m.

A store clerk said he saw flames coming from near the ICEE machine and got out unharmed.

The damage appears to be extensive, as the building was engulfed in flames.

Highway 64 was shut down in both directions for several hours while a fire hose was stretched from a hydrant across the roadway. Traffic is flowing again, according to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office.

An investigation into what caused the fire is underway.
