10-year-old boy struck by 18-wheeler when crossing Quitman Main Street

WOOD COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) - Quitman Police Department, DPS and other agencies responded to the scene where a child was struck by an 18-wheeler on Hwy 37, known as Main Street inside the Quitman city limits.

The child, a 10-year-old boy, was crossing the street in the intersection of Main and Redbud at around 5:30 p.m., according to Quitman police. The semi-truck was headed northbound into Quitman on Hwy 37 when the child was struck.

The boy was taken via ambulance to a Quitman hospital, and was then flown by a helicopter to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas. The child’s condition is unknown at this time, but according to Quitman Chief of Police John Farmer, boy was able to talk to emergency response personnel.

The constable said that traffic was backed up several miles on Hwy 37 south of Quitman while law enforcement investigated. As of 7:30 p.m., the scene had been cleared.
