LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) - Preparations are being made for Longview’s 36th annual Thanksgiving food drive.

Monday, volunteers collected donations of canned goods, monetary donations, even turkeys. The volunteers then packaged the food and prepared it for distribution on Tuesday.

Charlotte Davis, Chair of the Thanksgiving food drive, said the fact that the food drive has been able to come together so well during this time has been amazing. She said the community and schools have been so supportive with their help and donations.

“The community has been unbelievable with donations and the schools that have worked so hard this year, Trinity School of Texas donated 14,000 cans. Now a large part of that they did through monetary donations and they bought it through Super One. Longview ISD, I would guess close to 10,000 cans, and then the other school that was involved is University Academy of Longview. Those three schools were a huge part of what we got here today,” Davis said.

Davis said there are already 1,000 boxes ready to go for the food drive. The applicants were pre-approved in October. Applicants will bring their approval card with them when they pick up their box at the Longview Exhibit Building.

“We are really excited about what’s going on,” Davis said. “It’s amazing, this community has come together. We’re just truly blessed. Through the COVID, its been amazing.”

The food giveaway begins Tuesday at the Longview Exhibit Building. Because of COVID-19, pickup will be done in a drive-thru format.
