1 dead in crash on US 59 north of Garrison
NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - UPDATE: DPS confirms one person has died in a crash on US 59 north of Garrison Tuesday. They also said the road is now clear and reopen.
According to DPS, at 7:15 this morning, Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on US 59, approximately 2.5 miles north of the city of Garrison in Rusk County. The investigators preliminary report indicates that the driver of a 2020 Kenworth towing a semi-trailer was traveling north on US 59 in the outside lane of traffic slowing to turn right into a private drive. At the same time, the driver of a 2006 Freightliner truck towing a trailer was also traveling north on US 59 and struck the rear of the trailer the Kenworth was towing.
DPS said as a result of the crash, the driver of the Kenworth, Jessie Dale Cashion, 40, of Lancaster and his co-driver Robert Allen Cain, 48, of Nacogdoches were transported to Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital in stable condition.
DPS said the driver of the Freightliner was identified as Salvador A. Oliva, 65, of Edinburg, was pronounced at the scene by Judge Jackie Risinger and was taken to Laird Funeral Home in Nacogdoches.
The crash remains under investigation.
UPDATE: According to a traffic update from the Texas Department of Transportation, U.S. Highway 59 north of Garrison has re-opened to two-way traffic only as crews work to clear the scene where two 18-wheelers collided. Hazmat crews are still on the scene.
Motorists are being directed to one northbound lane and one southbound lane. Drivers in that area should reduce speed and obey all traffic control.
According to a traffic alert from the Texas Department of Transportation, all lanes of US 59 North of Garrison are currently closed after two 18-wheelers collided.

According to DPS, Troopers are currently on the scene of a crash involving two truck tractor semi-trailers on US 59 between Garrison and Timpson in Rusk County near the Shelby County line. DPS is asking motorists to avoid the area as the roadway is completely blocked at this time.
A fire is being reported and emergency crews are on the scene. TxDOT will assist in traffic control once it is safe and motorists should prepare for delays, per a tweet from the TxDot.
The time of clearance is not known at this time.
