Rose City bragging rights on the line in the Red Zone Game of the Week

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - The names are new this year but the rivalry is the same as Tyler High School and Tyler Legacy High school will meet up at Rose Stadium this Friday night.

The two schools started playing back in 1958. Legacy won the game last year. The Red Raiders come into the game after a statement win 70-32 over Lufkin last week while Tyler lost their opener to Texas High 41-21.

Legacy coach Joe Willis said he told his team that they need to be ready for the game and not walk in thinking it will be easy after their week 1 performance.

“There will be a lot of passion a lot of emotion around that game," Willis said. That is what both of these teams need. That is what the community needs. It needs to be exciting. It should be a fun week filled with a lot of anticipation.”

Tyler High School head coach Ricklan Holmes has watched this rivalry as a kid, played in it as an athlete and coached in it as a coach.

“Once it was Tyler High School then it was John Tyler and Robert E. Lee," Holmes said. “Come this Friday it will be Tyler HS and Tyler Legacy HS. One is still red. One is still blue. One is the Lions and one is the Raiders. The importance of this game outweighs any record or any ranking a team could have. You do not want. Both teams will come to play and both teams will come to win. It is about who will be the Rose City favorite.”

Legacy will be the designated home team for the matchup. Kickoff between the two schools is set for 7:30 PM at Rose Stadium.
