LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) - A popular Longview barbeque restaurant has closed down because of a fire. The owner of Bodacious Bar-B-Que on Sixth Street said they may be down, but they’re not out.
Bodacious Bar-B-Que owner Shannon Fell didn’t think she’d be doing a cleanup like she was doing Monday. She said the fire department isn’t quite sure how the fire started.
“As far as they can tell it started in the roof. Burned up my pit room and then half of my kitchen, as far as the ceiling; the rooftop,” Fell said.
She says it happened late Saturday.
“Got a call from the fire department about midnight,” Fell said.
It didn’t take her long to get there, and she was surprised at the response.
“They had Sixth Street blocked off at both ends, at 80 and Sixth. It looked like the whole city of Longview’s fire department was here,” Fell said.
And as far as who called it in to 911:
“I was told a police officer did; driving by. I don’t know if they just saw smoke, we always have smoke coming from the building. I don’t know if they saw smoke or flames, which one it was,” Fell said.
Bodacious puts out a lot of smoke every day, and the fire department has been called in on that before, but it turns out to be just barbequing. This time it wasn’t. Fell said about a third of the roof is damaged, but the walls are sound.
She has 14 employees, but for now Fell is keeping some of them busy.
“They’re working today helping clean up, so we’ll see how far that goes. We’ve got a lot of cleaning to do. A lot of throwing away to do,” Fell said.
And then they had to deal with rain.
“We’re trying to stop the water from coming in right now,” Fell said.
That bodacious has a flat roof, and Fell tries to have a sense of humor about it where the water is going.
“Right now it’s only runoff is inside the building,” Fell said.
So for now they’ll continue cleaning up and talking to contactors. She says she’s not giving up this easily.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Longview Fire Department. Fell said she can tell you how long it would take to feed 500 people, but couldn’t hazard a guess as to how long it’ll be before she reopens.
