WHITEHOUSE, Texas (KLTV) - Many Whitehouse residents gathered together to honor a UPS driver for going above and beyond in their neighborhood for nearly 40 years.
KLTV’s Dante Nuñez explains what this means to this driver and the community who put this surprise event together.
Roosevelt Petty JR., better known to some in Whitehouse as Rosie, turned the corner during his delivery route to see the street corner filled with people and signs thanking him for his service over the years. “I expected something but nothing on this magnitude, not today even.”
Organizer, Angie Morrison, and many other residents say they felt it was necessary to host this event and give back.
“Not only does he go above and beyond with his job with UPS, he’s an amazing man and I want to honor him as best as we can as a community.”
Rosie told us what he saw as he drove by.
“To see all of those people out there with these Rosie signs to see all of those kids out there saying we love rose, that’s a humbling experience a very humbling experience.”
Morrison tells us why it was important to gift a plaque to Rosie
“I know he’s planning on retiring soon and so we wanted to make sure that he has a memory of something special of how much he is loved.”
One participant in the crowd, Betsy Groce says, Rosie is well known in the community.
“He was the friendliest delivery man, I mean everybody at the school knew him by name, here comes Rosie. He would go above and beyond the call of duty whenever he would deliver packages for us.”
Rosie explained how thankful he is.
“You just want to break down and cry but then you look and you think about how easy this job has been made by the people here in Whitehouse. It really makes you feel good that people give back what you’ve tried to give to them. I’ve tried to give nothing but love and I’m receiving love today and I really appreciate the people here in Whitehouse.”
Rosie tells us he will deliver his last package by January 2021.
