LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) - The fire burning at a compost site in Longview for more than two weeks has died down to a smolder, as the amount of timber fueling the flames turns to ash.

The fire at the city’s compost site began on Dec. 15 and grew to around four acres at its peak.

The Longview fire marshal said he stopped by the site Monday morning to check on the fire’s progress. He said it appeared as though most of the wood fuel was spent, and the flames were being contained in the proper area.

The fire marshal did not have a timeframe on when he believed the fire would be out.

Much of the compost in the pile came from the trees and limbs downed during a round of severe storms in May. The city of Longview announced earlier this month that the compost site would be closed while it allowed the fire to burn out.
