Smith County deputies arrest man who fled assault call

Update from Smith County Sheriff’s Office: This morning, September 10, 2019, at approximately 6:50 a.m. Smith County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to an Assault call in the 13800 block of State Hwy 155 South in Tyler. Upon arrival of the initial units the suspect fled the scene on foot wearing tennis shoes and blue shorts. A brief foot chase ensued with the suspect running across Hwy. 155 in the heavy morning traffic.

It was learned that the suspect, Tony LeMark Battles III – 27, had come to the residence and allegedly assaulted a disabled individual. When Deputies arrived on scene he fled to avoid being arrested.

A short while later it was learned that Battles had made it to the area near Old Jacksonville Hwy and FM 346 in Flint. Deputies responded to that area and were able to locate Battles attempting to conceal himself in a residential construction site. He was immediately taken into custody without incident.

Tony Battles was taken to the Smith County Jail where he was booked in for Injury to Disabled with Intent to Commit Bodily Injury. He was also charged with three warrants issued by Smith County Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace Jon Johnson for Resisting Arrest, Search or Transport and two charges of Driving While License Invalid with Previous Conviction.

SMITH COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) - Smith County deputies are in the area of State Highway 155, south of Tyler, after someone ran from a scene of a reported assault.

Sheriff’s office spokesman Larry Christian said just before 7 a.m., multiple patrol cars were dispatched to the 13800 block of 155 after a call of an assault. Christian said the suspect ran from the scene.

He is described as a black man wearing no shirt and blue shorts. He is 27.
