PANOLA COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Officials with the Carthage Fire Department confirm three people have died in a head-on collision.

The crash happened on Tuesday morning about three miles west of Carthage on US 79, according to the fire department. Officials say the head-on crash involved a truck hauling a trailer and a Dodge Durango.

DPS Sgt. Jean Dark sent the following release on Tuesday night:

This morning at approximately 9:30, Troopers responded to a two vehicle fatal crash on US-79, 2.5 miles west of the city of Carthage in Panola County. Preliminary crash investigation revealed that the driver of a 2011 Dodge Ram towing a trailer, William A. Oldfield, 75, of Joinerville was traveling northbound on US-79 behind a truck tractor towing a semi-trailer that was slowed to make a right hand turn into a private drive.

Oldfield attempted to pass the turning vehicle and trailer on the left, traveling into the southbound lane of US-79 where he struck, head-on, a Dodge Durango driven by Jaimee Shawn Bowen, 34, of Gary. Both drivers were killed as a result of the crash, as well as a passenger riding with Bowen, Robert Eural Harthcock, 34, of Gary. Judge David Gray made the pronouncements. The crash remains under investigation.

Both directions of the highway were temporarily blocked while crews investigated.
