LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The 2019 season will be the final season for the foreseeable future where Lufkin will play host to a team from Mexico.

The series with a Mexico team started in 2016 when Lufkin first hosted Prepa Tech, a high school prep team for Monterrey Institute of Technology in Monterrey, Mexico. Lufkin won the first game 35-7. The games only got more lopsided. In 2017 Prepa Tech returned and Lufkin won 47-7. The first two games were respectable compared to 2018. In the summer leading up to the game, it was discovered Prepa Tech would not be making the trip. Instead Coach Todd Quick was told Borregos Toluca would instead be the opponent.

“The Monterrey Tech team had a conflict with the college team,” Quick said. “They had a game the next day so when they travel here they loose the coaches for the college game. Last year they sent a group of players from three teams at a school and that is why it looked like an all-star team with all the different helmets. This year when I talked with them I said we need a better team. They said they had one. They said it was the team that won the championship last year. They are the Redskins Del Estado. They are a single team that plays together and travels together. They said they will be a lot better than what they sent.”

The contract for the event will end after the 2019 season and Quick said the school will go another route after next season. In the previous years, Lufkin had participated in the Battle on the Border in Shreveport. Quick is leaning for an in-state game instead.

“The Border Bowl has contacted us,” Quick said. “It is an option we will probably not take. We are looking for an in-state team that will challenge us and prepare us for district. That is the last game before district. We also have realignment so there is a lot of things up in the air. Our first choice will be looking for an in-state team that will be able to do a home and away series.”

Lufkin will open up the 2019 season on August 30 at home against Longview.
