Wood County constable: Firefighter struck by manhunt suspect during car chase

VAN ZANDT COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - A suspect is in custody after a manhunt that lasted most of the day Friday.

According to Wood County Constable Pct 2 Kelly Smith, the suspect was taken into custody on Friday evening. His identity has not been released.


During a search for a fugitive wanted in Gregg County, the suspect’s vehicle struck a firefighter who had stopped traffic during the pursuit.

Kelly Smith, Wood County’s constable for Precinct 2, said that the firefighter was hit in the Wills Point area. The firefighter was taken to a local hospital and is expected to be OK, Smith said.

Wood said the search for Chad Nathan Veazey, 38, has been called off. Multiple agencies were involved in the search.

The pursuit began Friday morning near Mineola and was then centered near County Road 2406 in Van Zandt County, according to Wood County Constable Kelly Smith.

A Wood County constable and the Texas Department of Public Safety were involved in the search.

A K9 unit also responded to the scene, and TDCJ dogs searched for Veazey.

A statement was released by Texas DPS Sgt. Jean Dark at 7:22 p.m. Friday:

Around 8:17 a.m. today, a Trooper attempted to stop a Ford Fiesta passenger car traveling westbound on Hwy 80 in Wood County just east of Mineola for a traffic violation. Preliminary information indicates the driver chose to evade the Trooper and continued west into the City of Wills Point. The suspect vehicle struck a volunteer firefighter who was attempting to clear traffic near Hwy 47 and Hwy 80. The firefighter suffered non-incapacitating injuries.

The suspect then continued south and threw a firearm out of the window of the car, which struck the Trooper's vehicle. The suspect then traveled off the road through several pastures before abandoning the vehicle and fleeing on foot.

Officials were unable to locate the suspect. The individual’s identity is known and Troopers are currently seeking arrest warrants on charges of; evading arrest, aggravated assault on a public servant, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, felon in possession of a firearm and fleeing. The name of the individual is not being released at this time. The investigation is ongoing and no additional information is currently available.
