Murder suspect Zavala-Garcia appears in court, DNA testing continues in case

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -DNA testing continues in the trial for accused murderer Gustavo Zavala Garcia.

Zavala-Garcia was arrested and charged with the capital murder of Kayla Gomez-Orozco, age 10, in November 2016.

In a March 7 pretrial hearing in Smith County, the court learned that DNA testing being conducted by the Department of Public Safety is expected to be complete in April.

Zavala-Garcia’s next pretrial hearing is scheduled for April 4.

Judge Jack Skeen says if the schedule stays as is a trial date will be set for the middle of July.

Zavala-Garcia is accused of killing Kayla Gomez-Orozco in November 2016. After she went missing from a Bullard church, an extensive search was conducted. Her body was found in a well on Zavala-Garcia's property.
