VAN, TX (KLTV) - Van ISD said they are mourning the loss of one of their 8th grade students.
According to a Facebook post, the district is mourning the loss of Fernando Vela, who passed away from injuries sustained in a single car accident Saturday night.
“Fernando had a lot of friends and students looked up to him. He was a leader among his peers. He was energetic, athletic, respectful, and had a great love for his family. This is a sad day for the Van Junior High School family. Fernando will be greatly missed," said Van Junior High Principal Richard Pride.
“Fernando had a big heart and loved to help people. He probably tried harder than anyone in our football program. He loved football and loved being a Vandal.” said Coach Justin Stanfield.
“Fernando was a great teammate and a pleasure to coach. He enjoyed every moment, especially the camaraderie of his teammates.” Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathies are with his family and friends during this extremely difficult time," said Coach Toby Mitchell.
