TYLER, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas man is dead after being hit by a truck while he was riding on his motorcycle.
“Um, hi, there has been an accident on Broadway. I was behind the truck and he just hit a pole, and I think he was ejected from the car...." Adrian Crowder told the 911 dispatcher.
It was after Crowder called 911 that he realized it was the same pickup that had passed him a few minutes prior on South Broadway.
“He went by me going, looked like he was going about 85 down Broadway,” Crowder said.
Tyler police said the pickup hit a motorcyclist from behind, then collided with a utility pole.
The motorcyclist was a 26-year-old Marine, Michael Gonzalez, who died later at the hospital.
“She said, ‘I told him, I told him to watch out for that guy on a motorcycle,’ and I thought, ‘oh, they hit they guy in the road,’” Crowder said.
Crowder said there was already someone trying to resuscitate Gonzalez, so he rushed to help the two people still trapped in their vehicle.
“I heard someone hollering ‘help, help, help!’ It was a lady in the truck, on the passenger’s side. I opened the door, she got out,” Crowder said.
Crowder had to act fast to get the driver out because by that time, the pickup had caught fire.
“This is going to be the end for me and him if the truck blows up,” Crowder remembered thinking.
Both driver and passenger were treated and released within 12 hours of the accident.
Tyler police later obtained a warrant for a blood sample on the driver of the pickup.
“It’s just sad, it’s very sad, and it’s emotional and my heart goes out to his family and the other people in the truck, as well, too,” Crowder said.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
