LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A lot has changed over the past two decades in Region XIV of the NJCAA, except for the coaches in charge of the women’s basketball programs at Angelina College and Tyler Junior College.

Byron Coleman has been with AC for 21 years and the head coach for the last 14 years. Trenia Hoard has been with TJC for 19 years. Over that time the two have moved from being rivals to being friends.

“Trenia knows how to coach,” Coleman said. “She is a great teacher of the game. She has done good with the league and keeping it competitive."

The two school will meet up on Wednesday night in Lufkin with both teams being ranked.

“Both of us are going to give our best shot,” Hoard said. "We will probably be on the phone later that night discussing who did what and what we should have done differently. "

Both teams have had successful seasons. The Lady Roadrunners are 13-1 with their only loss coming to Trinity Valley. They are also ranked #14. The TJC Lady Apaches enter the game at #16 in the nation and a 12-2 overall record. TJC is one game up in the standings with a 3-0 conference record while the women are 2-1.

“It will be good," Coleman said. "We got two teams nationally ranked teams. There is always a lot on the line. She is going to play fast she knows we are going to come here and play fast. There is not too many tricks or anything. No rabbits are being pulled or anything new. We are just going to line up and play basketball.”

To win TJC will need to stop Natasha Mack, one of the top players in all of NJCAA competition.

“Her name says it all,” Hoard said. “She is a Mack truck. When you get a player like that you count yourself blessed. She is a phenom in Junior College Basketball. We usually don’t get those kinds of players.”

The two teams will tip off at 5:30 pm on Wednesday from the campus of Angelina College. The game will be followed by the Angelina men playing Panola College.
