‘Texas Monthly’ recognizes Nacogdoches BBQ food truck - twice

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Just two days shy of his one-year anniversary, a Nacogdoches barbecue food truck has received impressive honors, not once, but twice by “Texas Monthly.”

“Texas is king of barbecue,” said Brendyn Todd, owner of Brendyn’s BBQ.

More than a year ago, Todd started a new venture associated with his passion, making barbecue.

“I think for years all I did was read and watch videos about barbecue, and I remember making my wife taste BBQ sauce at 5 in the morning because I’m obsessed with it,” Todd said.

The Nacogdoches food truck owner said he’s constantly wanting to make new dishes and make food not only better but different as well.

On Thursday, “Texas Monthly” released their list of top places in 2018 for best barbecue bites in Texas. In November of 2018, a food critic raved about his barbecue and two dishes he served - the pig apple sandwich and the espresso brisket.

“After that article, we had people come from Iowa, from Virginia. I had a family drive in from Houston that morning. They were first in line, got their barbecue, and ate it. Then they went all the way back to Houston just because ‘Texas Monthly reviewed it,’” Todd said.

The food truck is tucked behind the Red House Winery in Nacogdoches, and customers come in from far places or right next door.

“It’s consistency. I mean it’s always, you don’t have to wonder is it going to be a good day, is it not a good day? It always taste the same, and it’s always delicious. It really is,” said Morgan Rogers, a customer.

For the first food truck owner in Nacogdoches, being named twice is a dream come true.

When I saw it I, was in tears cause it’s a dream come true. For it to be two days from my first-year anniversary and to be in ‘Texas Monthly’ twice, I can’t even comprehend how proud I am of the hard work that we’ve done to put into it, to sacrifice so much and then to see that after one year, it’s a dream come true, it’s a blessing," Todd said.

For 2019, the food truck owner is considering adding more days to the schedule to be open for business.
