KILGORE, TX (KLTV) - Kilgore College is set to announce Willie Gooden as their 16th head football coach.
The hiring of Willie Gooden was a no-brainer, both sides said.
“It’s big for me, and that’s why this job was so important for me to get. Because I didn’t want, you know, anyone that would have come in this position. I would still consider this home,” he said.
Two years as a player, 12 years as a coach and a Ranger Hall-of-Famer, this is home for Gooden for sure. His walk-on days helped set the tone for where he is today...perseverance...not easy being a walk-on.
Gooden, an 11-year member of the coaching staff and former Ranger football player, was named interim head coach in December when J.J. Eckert accepted the head coaching position at Northeastern State University (NSU) in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
Gooden spent three seasons as the defensive line coach at NSU before his time coaching at Kilgore College. He began his playing career at Kilgore College in 2000 and earned all-conference recognition in 2000-01. He was also a part of the undefeated 2001 Ranger football team.
