SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - UPDATE: The Smith County Sheriff’s Office has released more details on a homicide investigation Saturday.
According to the sheriff’s office, on December 15, 2018 at 7:58 am, the Smith County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a possible deceased subject on the side of the road in the 2700 block of Old Gladewater Hwy.
Upon the arrival of deputies a deceased black male subject was located on the east side of the roadway in a grassy area.
Smith County Sheriff’s Investigators and the Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene and began their investigation. Smith County Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace James Cowart responded to the location and held an Inquest. The victim was shot at least once with a firearm. The crime scene has been processed at this time.
An autopsy was ordered by Judge Cowart and will be performed Monday morning.

UPDATE: Law enforcement said the victim of a homicide on Saturday is 49-year old Jerome Jones. They said he had at least one gunshot wound and did not live on the street he was found dead on.
Tyler Police will be holding a press conference on the crime on Monday at 1:30 p.m.

Crime scene investigators are still on the scene, according to the sheriff’s office. Tyler police are also on the scene.
