The Vatican says it will make public more than three (m) million files on World War Two prisoners in January. The Vatican says it will also release documents relating to its diplomacy in Germany from 1922 to the outbreak of World War Two in 1939. Before becoming a cardinal, the future Pope Pius the Twelfth served as a diplomat in Germany. And as Vatican secretary of state, he was responsible for Vatican diplomacy in the years leading up to war. Critics of Pope Pius the Twelfth say he failed to raise his voice and use his position to head off the extermination of European Jews by the Nazis. But defenders insist he did all he could to help Jews and other victims.
