Will a bigger space inspire bigger cakes?

TYLER, TX - Fans of Janie's Cakes will be following the aroma of her sweet treats to a new location. The Texas-based baker of gourmet, all-natural pound cakes has completed the purchase of the property formerly home to the Coats-McCain Lumber Company.

The 1.5 acre property, located in downtown Tyler at the corners of E. Front Street and S. Fannin and S. Oakland, will be used for the future expansion of the company's bakery and production operations.

"We're moving production out of our current location at 420 E. 5th Street," said owner Janie Clapp. "The new bakehouse on Front Street will allow us to dramatically increase our production capabilities and capacity."

The 5th Street location will continue to be used as the company's retail store where customers can drop in a buy a pound cake. The original Coats-McCain building will be remodeled to house bakery production. The company has no current plans for the building located on the corner of S. Fannin and E. Front occupied by Smart Start of East Texas and expects Smart Start to remain at that location for the foreseeable future.

Ms. Clapp expects to move bakery operations to the new downtown location by the end of May 2009.
