EAST TEXAS (KLTV) - 11% of babies born in the United States are premature. The March of Dimes is hoping to lower that number.
At the kickoff for the March for Babies in Tyler, the March of Dimes recognized KLTV 7's Dana Hughey.
Just a year ago, her two boys, Ford and Hayden, were born three and a half months premature. The Hughey's sons are now just over a year old and healthy, and they were named the March of Dimes ambassadors for 2009.
"I felt it was my obligation to help other mothers who might be in the same position as we were in the hospital not knowing if our little boys were gonna make it," said Hughey. "The March of Dimes is really instrumental in research and legislation to help premature babies and also to help babies with birth defects so I mostly feel like I have to do it. It's kind of my calling now."
