FEDERAL COURT ASKED TO OVERTURN BAN ON BIBLE CLUB

A Pennsylvania high school student whose Bible club was barred from meeting during a school activity period has asked a federal appeals court to rule that the ban is illegal. In a suit filed in January, Punxsutawney Area High School senior Melissa Donovan complained that while other student groups -- including a ski club and Students Against Drunk Driving -- were allowed to meet during the school day, her Bible-study group was barred from meeting. Her attorney says the ban violates the federal Equal Access Act, which allows student religious groups to meet in public schools during noninstructional time.
