Andrews Park Opens As Safe Haven For Tyler Kids

There's a new place in town for Tyler kids to play. A ribbon-cutting ceremony opened Andrews Park, in the Hillside area.

The park, a cumulation of two years work, will serve the kids in the area. A neighborhood survey in 1995 revealed that families wanted better police protection, and a safe place for their children to play. The St. Paul Children's Foundation built the park, one of several projects to improve this neighborhood.

St. Paul's Executive Director Karolyn Davis said, "The neighborhood was full of graffiti, gangs. That's not so now. The neighborhood doesn't have any graffiti, and the children are out playing every day. It's really changed the neighborhood."

As for increased police protection, St. Paul's also donates part of their building to the Tyler Police, who have a substation there.
