TYLER, TX (KLTV) - The fate of Camp Tyler will be decided tonight and KLTV 7 will be there. Wednesday, East Texans raised their concerns with us.
Tyler ISD is proposing transferring operations from TISD to the Camp Tyler Foundation, saving an estimated 600-thousand dollars a year. Some East Texans worry that if the camp is run outside the district, the quality would suffer. However, the TISD board president says the foundation's program for the camp is very similar to the one already in place.
"The foundation is going to run the same 3 day 2 night program but it's going to be condensed into a shorter window of time," said Ron Vicery, TISD board president. "They feel that they can operate the camp more efficiently."
"It's one of those situations if it ain't broke don't fix it," said Melinda O'Quinn. "You can't put a price tag on Camp Tyler."
"If we dilute it across the county or across East Texas, they're just going to try and run more and more kids through there, faster and faster," said Bob Brewer.
As for the teachers at the camp, TISD officials said they will be first in line for other job openings in the district. Coming up tonight on KLTV News at 6, our reporter, Courtney Lane will bring you a live update as the meeting gets started.
