LeTourneau University and the Gregg County Health Department wants to encourage the love of reading amongst youngsters.
LeTourneau students gave away more than a thousand dollars worth of new books to South Ward Elementary students. The scholastic children's books for age groups from first to fifth grade include some Caldecott Award Winners, covering a variety of themes from planets to pets. Letourneau students also volunteered as "reading buddies".
"Everyone of these children are going to take a book home with them that will be theirs to keep, and we know that that can get them excited about reading," said Kathy Stephens.
"We get books that we can relate to," said fifth grader Valynnsia Bodie. "They're fun to read and they help us learn. I like books, really."
