They were climbing into the ring this weekend in Troup. Dozens of boxers from ages 8 and up came to Troup for the Golden Gloves.
The amateur boxing event drew them from Lufkin to Longview and over to Dallas, from the kids to the advanced classes. For the fighters, they came for the thrill of stepping into the ring.
"I've been doing it for a while," 16 year-old boxer Jerrion Campbell said, "and it's still fun to me. When I was coming out watching guys like Muhammad Ali, I knew that's what I wanted to be."
Winners in the advanced divisions advance to the state championships, to be held in Fort Worth in March.
