Debt is all around us, especially now with the poor economy, and many people don't know where to turn to for help. One East Texas church saw the need to help those struggling financially by offering a course called Financial Peace University. One Tyler couple says the course gave them a sense of freedom they have not felt in a long time.
Angie and Charles Long are like many young couples. On top of taking care of their one year-old daughter, Angie and Charles are trying to pay off their debt.
"I've been through college twice, so we've got a lot of debt, and so we're trying to figure out what's the best way to get out of debt because it has just consumed our lives," said Angie. Last October, Angie and Charles took a 13 week course called Financial Peace University. John Windsor, pastor at Friends Community Church in Tyler is offering the course because of so many other couple's like the Longs.
"The biggest thing about financial troubles is the hopelessness of it," said Windsor. "People just get under the crunch and think there is no way out. This is impossible, and Dave's plan, he comes in and teaches you how to make a simple budget. I know that word scares people to death, but he shows you how to do it." Windsor is talking about Dave Ramsey, founder of FPU. Ramsey is a personal money management expert who uses the Bible to teach financial responsibility.
"You know the Bible over 800 times mentions money, and what Dave does, you know not in a preachy type of way, he brings this wisdom from the ages to bare," said Windsor. Angie and Charles say in just a few moths, they have already noticed a difference.
"You know we don't go out as much, we don't spend as much money, you know we take better care of our things, and it's just amazing at what this has done for us," said Angie.
On average, Windsor says families reduce their debt by $5,300 in just 91 days. Friends Community Church is starting a new course Sunday, January 25th at 6:00 p.m. For more information call Friends at 903-526-4775. FPU is open to the public.
