SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Former NBA star and current TV commentator Charles Barkley was arrested early this morning in suburban Phoenix, on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. In a statement to The Associated Press, the 45-year-old Hall of Famer says he's disappointed that he put himself in that situation and that "the Scottsdale police were fantastic."
Barkley says now it's a legal matter and he will have no further comment until it is resolved.
According to a police spokesman, an officer with a task force that targets drunken driving saw Barkley run a stop sign about 1:30 a.m. The spokesman says Barkley failed field sobriety tests and was arrested. Barkley declined to submit to a breath test but was given a blood test. The results weren't immediately available.
Police say that after Barkley was processed, he was cited and released.
