SHARON REPORTEDLY BRIEFED ON BULGING WALL AT HOLY SITE

An Israeli newspaper reports that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has met with top officials to discuss the potential collapse of a retaining wall at Jerusalem's most disputed holy site.

Archaeologists have warned for more than a year about a bulge in the southern wall of the Al Aqsa Mosque compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount.

The bulge is around the corner from the Western Wall where Jews pray. The Israeli newspaper says Sharon called the meeting because of fears the wall could collapse during the Muslim holiday of Ramadan in November, when hundreds of thousands of worshipers are expected to pray at the compound. It's feared that any change to the site, holy to both Jews and Muslims, could produce explosive results.
