Freedom Fighters; Bill Palmer

It was on a bombing mission over Italy in World War Two that Bill Palmer's plane was shot down and he was taken prisoner by German soldiers. Determined to escape, Palmer wrapped himself in blankets and rolled off a moving prisoner train when it slowed down on a mountain pass. Palmer soon made contact with the underground and after numerous moves from basements to culverts to forests, was once again in American held territory.

Bill Palmer went on to complete 68 missions during the war and was awarded the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, and Purple Heart, among other citations.
