State Bound: Lobos Head To Waco

It is the goal of every player who puts on a jersey and pads: The state title. Longview Lobo football players are one day, and one win from making it their own.

"It's something they've dreamed of all their whole life," head coach John King said, "and it's been 71 years since we won one here at Longview High School. I just see a bunch of kids that's hungry to try and win a state championship."

Coach King wanted to keep the week simple and his team in game mode. No player interviews on Friday and there was no pep rally. Lobo fans were asked to line the streets as team buses passed by, sending the team on to Waco and on to victory.

"We've kind of let them enjoy the day," Coach King said of his players. "Let the reins lose a little bit. "

Lobos fans were out in full force as their team left and they will pack Floyd Casey Stadium on Saturday.

"We've sold out of state tickets is my understanding," King said, "and Lobo nation is going to travel strong to Waco. Best fans in the world and they support the best team in the world."

The Lobos will have a tough challenge in unbeaten Lake Travis. But they have already risen to the challenge 15 times this season.

"I feel like these kids have shown all year long. Those that experienced the trip last year know how to handle themselves," King said.

Entering the bus one player shouted out to fans, "When we come back, we're number one!"

Longview plays Lake Travis Saturday, December 20, at 2 p.m. at Waco's Floyd Casey Stadium.
