SOME CHURCHES DITCH PEWS FOR STADIUM SEATING

While most people want to be comfortable with their church's teaching or worship style, some consider another kind of comfort almost as important.

Elderly worshipers in Michigan tell the Grand Rapids Press that they're sold on their church's plush theater-style seats and couldn't bear to sit through a service in wooden pews. A church-seating salesman says congregations that opt for stadium seating or cushioned moveable chairs also find that it's a good way to make unchurched people feel more comfortable.

But traditionalists say pews unite worshipers who would be separated by individual seats.
