HOUSE VOTES TO LET HOSPITALS REFUSE TO PROVIDE ABORTIONS

With support from the Bush administration, the House has passed a bill that would let hospitals receive federal funding even if they refuse to perform or pay for abortions. The Abortion Non-Discrimination Act passed 229-to-189. Supporters say it protects Catholic hospitals and others that oppose abortion from being forced to perform a procedure they consider immoral. But opponents denounced the bill as a politically-motivated measure that has no chance of being brought before the Democrat-controlled Senate.
