A blue jay in Smith County has tested positive for the West Nile Virus. According to data from the Texas Department of Health, it may be the first case detected in Smith County. The bird was found in the 3900 block of Post Oak road in Tyler. Tyler Vector Control has treated the area and will continue treatment through the remainder of mosquito season. The virus normally infects birds, but mosquitoes become infected when they feed on birds and can carry it to people.
