BILL TO PERMIT CHURCH POLITICAL ACTIVITY DENOUNCED

A Texas congressman is denouncing legislation that would let churches endorse political candidates without risking the loss of their tax-exempt status.

Democrat Chet Edwards says the Houses of Worship Political Speech Protection Act would divide churches and "demean" their spiritual mission. The House bill has 130 cosponsors, but is unlikely to become law in time for this year's elections.

Supporters of the legislation say churches should enjoy the same free speech rights as other American institutions. But Edwards says political disputes would only "tear churches apart."
