Wood County man guilty of assaulting two mentally disabled women
James Owen Spurlock (Wood County Sheriff's Department)
A Hawkins man has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting two mentally disabled women who lived in the resident care facility at which he worked.
68 year old James Owen Spurlock is charged with aggravated sexual assault of a disabled individual.
According to the Wood County District Attorney's office, Spurlock is accused of having sex with a 38 year old mentally disabled woman, who told her family that he was using sex 'to help prepare for her marriage'. The abuse was discovered when the woman began to speak out about it to her family, who immediately asked the Wood County Sheriff's office for an investigation. During that investigation, it was discovered that a 24 year old mentally disabled woman was also a victim. Spurlock was arrested at Touchstone Farms in Wood County, where he worked and the victims lived.
The State had planned to call the victims as witnesses against Spurlock, but the defendant's guilty plea eliminated that necessity.
Formal sentencing for Spurlock is set for January 13, 2009. He faces at least 20 years for each charge.
