JEWISH FEAST OF TABERNACLES STARTS THIS EVENING

Jews around the world begin celebrating Succot (soo-KOHT') -- the feast of tabernacles -- at sundown this evening.

In Israel, observant Jews build temporary booths covered with tree branches next to their homes. They'll eat their meals there during the week-long festival. Some will sleep in the booths as well, commemorating the primitive conditions that Israelites faced in the desert after their exodus from Egypt and the shacks that Hebrew farmers built in their fields during harvest season.

Children decorate the booths with streamers and pictures. And observant Jews take four species of plants found in the Holy Land to synagogue during the holiday for processions marking the harvest season.
