Record-setting quarterback Godfrey leading Gilmer

The numbers are staggering for Darian Godfrey. A junior starting his eighth playoff game, with five thousand passing yards and sixty-seven touchdown passes so far. He owns the Buckeyes record books, but he says the numbers don't matter.

"That's not really important," Godfrey said. "All I look back on is, did I win? Did we meet our goal for every game? Did we meet our goal as a team?"

The Buckeyes will play undefeated West Orange-Stark Saturday in Lufkin. Godfrey is 25-2 as a starter, but after last year's state championship appearance, he found himself the only returning offensive starter on a team with high expectations.

"When things go bad, I've got to be the one to pick up the team. Last year, they were there to pick me up. This year, I have to pick up them."

With names like McKenzie, Kinne, and Johnson preceding Godfrey,  quarterbacking Gilmer, and all that entails, has been a ticket to playing college football in the Jeff Traylor era.

"There's a history behind us," Godfrey said. "It goes back to 2000 and runs all the way up here. There's a bunch of shoes to fill, and I want my name to be mentioned with those quarterbacks."

"That's a huge goal for me."

For now, Godfrey's goal is to get his next win.
