Lobos Preparing For Big Game With Carter

It is a Thanksgiving tradition: Schools out but the Longview Lobos are practicing.

This week they are preparing for a tough challenge in the Carter Cowboys.

"It's going to be a little bit more physical football game than what we've seen in the last month," Lobo Coach John King said.

"The coaches feel like the team that wins this game is the team that's going to win state," running back Jonathan Oliver said.

Longview is 10-2 and the reigning district champs. Carter is undefeated this season. When the Lobos moved from Class 5A to 4A, there were many who said they were a lock to win the state championship. The same was said for Carter who also moved from 5A to 4A.

"I felt like we might meet in the playoffs somewhere with the quality of football teams both of us had coming back," Coach King said. "I think that both of us are legitimate contenders for a championship."

The Cowboys are led by a familiar face to East Texans, former John Tyler coach Allen Wilson.

"Coach Wilson hadn't changed much since his days at Paris and John Tyler and since he's been at Carter," Coach King said. "He does what he does with his football team and they are very effective doing it."

Carter and Longview played in 2007, Longview won in a rout 50-18. Players say that's the past and they are committed to a state title in their future.

"After a while you kind of want to go past the Thanksgiving break," quarterback Aaron Johnson said, "and try to make it in December."

The Lobos made it to the state quarterfinals last season in 5A. They do not want another let down.

"I looked at some of the pictures from the game last year," Aaron Johnson said, "seeing some of my ex-teammates crying on the field it's kind of like, you don't want to feel it again but it's  motivation."

"For our seniors this is pretty much it for us," Jonathan Oliver said. "If we lose were done for the year and our high school career."

Carter and Longview play this Saturday at 2 p.m. at Corsicana's Tiger Stadium
