Vandals Battle To State Quarterfinals

The Van Vandals are in the third round of the state football playoffs, for the first time since 1996.

The 11-1 Vandals were on the practice field Monday afternoon preparing for this weekend's matchup.

Van won the district 14-3A title outright this year, one year after missing the post season despite going 7-3.

Coach Brady Pennington said trying to work out a practice schedule around the Thanksgiving holiday is a good problem to have.

"We've been out of the playoffs for three years so it's really awesome to be so close," Coach Pennington said. "You know last year we were 7-3 and tied for a district championship and stayed home."

"One of our goals was to get back into the playoffs. Once we got in there we set a new goal," Pennington said. "We wanted to be playing Thanksgiving weekend and here we are."

"We're taking the city farther too," right tackle Cameron McMinn said. "Really, we're always underestimated. Even though we've done so well, everybody is always degrading us no matter what."

"So it's a big plus to keep going and show everybody we are worth what we are doing."

The Vandals will take on Prosper, also 11-1, this Saturday night. Game time is at 7:30 p.m. at Mesquite's Memorial Stadium.
