DPS ranks Thanksgiving as most dangerous time to be on roads

Law enforcement has issued a warning this morning to stay sober on the roads this Thanksgiving.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ranks Thanksgiving as the most dangerous holiday for drivers, citing long-distance trips, heavy traffic, and drunk drivers.

In fact, local law enforcement tell us that about half the accidents they see are alcohol-related.

"In Texas, at least forty-five percent of our fatalities are alcohol related, so that tells us right there that drinking and driving is a very dangerous thing to do and not only that, the penalties are very severe," said Sgt. Greg Sanchez with Lufkin DPS.

In Texas, first time DWI offenders can face up to $7,000 in fines and fees.
