Newborn Awarded TJC Scholarship

Most people get college scholarships when they're 18-years old, but one Hawkins boy is starting early.

Lance David Salter already has a $1000 scholarship to Tyler Junior College and he's only 18 hours old. Lance came into the world early Tuesday morning and was awarded TJC's Founder's Day Scholarship. The prize goes to the first baby born on TJC's anniversary.

Lance's parents, Juanita and Larry Salter, say it's a lucky break for Lance - they didn't expect him until next week.

"I'm very excited this is such a wonderful opportunity for him and a double blessing," said Juanita Salter.

Lance's scholarship money will be invested, so he can accrue more over time. In 2021, TJC expects Lance will have at least $6000 to cover tuition and fees. Dr. William Crowe, president of Tyler Junior College says the oldest recipient of the Founder's Day Scholarship is now 6-years old.
